Apple purchase guide for iPhone 4S UAE

Hello PC and Mac users,

the time for the iPhone 4S has arrived. The three months post release date from Apple, on December 16th it arrives in the UAE, official with Etisalat and Du. However Apple has also released the iPhone across it's recently announced online Apple store, unlocked.

And how about the grey market companies, the official retailers that also sell them. What are the differences? Where should you purchase? What are the prices? Well, have a read of the information below and choose according to which plan fits you.

Since the iPhone 4S was released here in the UAE, the product was known as grey market as companies were importing and simply selling to customers at very expensive prices. There were FaceTime based models as they were purchased from outside of the UAE, along with a semi functioning Siri that was mainly US based. Siri finds location data based on a US platform. Eventually, as more grey market companies started selling the iPhone 4S, the competition became more present and the iPhone prices were reduced. This pattern usually happens with a new Apple product launch in the UAE. 

However this time around, Apple has opened an online store, poising that the iPhone 4S will have a release date. As Etisalat and Du announces their prices for iPhones, so did Apple. These products are sold through the official carrier, which means more warranty support, FaceTime is still being investigated by the TRA and mobile based operators, whereas iMessage works, Siri functionality to work fully for the UAE Is yet to be known to work fully along with Arabic support.

Apple is selling the iPhone completely unlocked with no sim card, pre paid or post paid data plan. The price is starting from AED 2599. 

The network operators, are selling them for slightly more, due to adding bundled based packages, such as 500MB for AED 50 dirhams on Etisalat for one year. Etisalat also assists with generally setting up your iPhone. This excludes iCloud setup, how iCloud works, iTunes backup information and more with reference to iPhone 4S software and support mentioned below. Etisalat offers a prepaid options. 

Post paid iPhone 4S" come with different data plans that a user can choose from. Check with your network operators. 

The retailers in the UAE are selling the iPhone for at least AED 300 dirhams more than the official Apple online store, with this they provide a Du based sim card, along with some top up and 1GB of data for AED 100 per month. So this options is different from Etisalat's, with more data but more expensive. 

The network operators offer incentives that Apple do not. If you purchase your iPhone 4S Apple, you need to purchase a pre paid card separately.

Eventually grey market companies will reduce their prices, as the iPhone 4S is officially released now from three platforms, Etisalat, Du and Apple, customers have plenty of choice of where to purchase their iPhone, setup and use with their data. 

And you can now use your iPhone 4S with iOS 5, which includes Reminders, iMessage, iCloud setup and more functionality.

Apple hard drives

So currently Apple is facing a linear shortage of hard drives. iMac's are showcasing delivery times that have increased and well, the MacBook air's could be next.

It is rumored that Apple is also planning on making 15" MacBook Air type models, if this is the case, hard drives will need to be ordered in advance through shipping, to be available to order as soon as possible.

The Mac Pro's are showcasing to still be existent, yet most computers sold currently from Apple are in the notebook range.

Cluttered desktop

Hello Mac users,

When you have a desktop full of information on your Mac, your probably managing accordingly right? Well that depends on your setup of how, you manage your file structures. Inevitably, deciding which files to have on your desktop and which files to store in Documents or other folders away from your desktop can be a cumbersome task. Then you tend to search via Spotlight to find the files your looking for, without much success. Ever wondered why this is so?

Well users that have information on their Mac tend to categorize accordingly with reference to folder structures. Where to specify those folders depends on one main factor, easy accessibility. However after some time the user notices their desktop is cluttered with all of their important information. How to manage this?

First and foremost, the user can go to Finder, View and then Clean up to organize the folders in a better view. Secondly the next best thing to do is create an alias. An alias is a shortcut of the original folder to a specific location. As an example, you could have one important folder that you access regularly after accessing many sub folders on your Mac. If you right click that main folder and select Make Alias then drag it to the desktop, you will have an exact copy of that folder. Any changes made will reflect in the main folder.

At this stage only the absolute essential, regular files that you continuously update should be an alias, on your desktop. That way you access the most regular files easily and your managing your file structures by not creating uncluttered space.

Siri

So with the new voice technology embedded on the horizon, Siri is a great tool that utilizes speech recognition for the iPhone 4S. Note, this is not an iOS 5 feature, but instead a direct point of access
for the iPhone 4S.

With the capability of Siri, a user may simply hold down the home button momentarily, a symbol
appears and then ask Siri for the weather in the city they reside. Then state, for example, what the
restaurants are like ' here '. Siri can determine the location.

A conversation can continue with Siri throughout this, from coffee shops to shopping to asking
Siri what does it think of Android, the device can respond almost accurately in real time.

It's a step away from general voice recognition. With Google Voice Actions viewed as a broad
point of search yet with some specific features, what it lacks is a front end personality.

Nuance that is the potential back end of Siri, highlights some key components that substantiates
it as an interaction style voice recognition system.

If Siri were available on other devices with the Apple, it could employ a new way of search..

10.7.2. update: Allow reordering of desktop spaces and full screen apps in Mission Control.

Enable dragging files between desktop spaces and full screen apps.

Address an issue that may cause the menu bar to not appear in full screen apps.

Improve the compatibility of Google contact syncing in Address Book.

Address an issue that may cause Keynote to become temporarily unresponsive.

Improve VoiceOver compatibility with Launchpad.

Address an issue that may cause a delay in accessing the network after waking from sleep.

Enable booting into Lion Recovery from a locally connected Time Machine backup drive.

Resolve an issue that causes screen zoom to stop working.

Improve Active Directory and LDAP integration.

Resolve an issue with Mail in which you may be unable to send through your MobileMe Mail account.

Resolve an issue with Mail when searching.

Address an issue that could cause iChat to prompt you for an account password which has already been saved.

This update also includes RAW image compatibility for additional digital cameras.

Disk Image (.dmg) and installer packages (.pkg) files are no longer included in "safe" file types.

New Apple products

So going through to the UAE, there are now a few places, you can go to, for Apple support. Electronic retailers in Dubai have putting a lot of emphasis on Apple support through their service centers.

Jumbo electronics has one, for example in Jebel Ali. A lot of products tend to go through the ABM system whereby if your product is faulty, it is assessed and exchanged within 7 - 14 days.

This applies for all Apple products, unless of course it can be fixed there and then. This mechanism behind support is pretty generic throughout Dubai, although the same retailers excel in providing good customer service. Each customer is treated as part helpful, part brand in Dubai retailers. Our clients tend to be specific to some stores.

Consult Mac however, has a reinvented way of how to resolve issues. We don't want our clients to wait 7 - 10 days for a repeat service. In fact, we want to resolve on the day. That's because with our expertise directly from working with Apple and training segmentation, we deliver an enhanced service to quickly isolate and find out whether it's software, or hardware, then inform whether it needs a repair.

This model was actually tried in a retail store. Whereby our client had a faulty product, she was told it would be shipped off to assess the issue. The device called iPad.

So if you do not have an iPad yet, get one today. Not only is it currently managing the tablet market space effectively, it is becoming the main tool for general internet usage.

Recent studies show that the iPad is one of the best browsing tools and many people's internet usage went up. The whole argument about HTML5 and Flash shows that it doesn't really matter about which platform people like to use, as long as the experience is solid, people can shift from one product to the next!

Now we have the iPad 2, a mechanism for a camera, faster processor and generally a more intuitive use coming up with iCloud and iOS5 to keep the functionality of Apple products completely integrated. No more wires are needed to setup this device.

Apple iPhone 5

So what can we expect from the new iPhone 5? How about new camera? Supposedly 8MP All new design. According to some reports the new iPhone will have a brand new way of buying products, named NFC technology.

Etisalat have already mentioned about a possibly new phone? 

Which means simply using your phone as a tool for buying products locally like a VISA pay as you wave system.

There also will be a more enhanced speech recognition built in, which means greater functionality for the iPhone.

Or how about approaching a nearby restaurant and the iPhone informs you of a reservation.

The next iPhone will surely resolve the antenna issue that has become evident through various communication channels.

However we hope that the new iPhone with iOS5 is one of the most exclusive phones yet. The music conference is in September. We'll see then.

Do you have an Apple?

Hello to our existing and new Mac users.

Apple retail stores have a 50% switch rate still, this longevity has been on placement for a while.

Although our staff generally writes articles, i thought this time i would, CEO of Ethereal Tech.

I tend to review the blog and add input wherever necessary, however i feel that the people in the Apple world, not just Dubai, should be accustomed to realizing the potential of Apple currently.

Nokia mobile phones currently do not have a long tenure, they are standing playing catch up, with RIM that surely had a lead behind iPhone and Android. RIM is now also on parallel with Nokia, playing catch up but with a more defined and reputable outlook.

Apple created the above. They single handedly managed the mobile phone infrastructure, downplaying the market share incentive to only then completely evaporate any idea of a basic mobile phone. Apple did, eventually re invent the smartphone. It then created the technological beast, from the unknown territory, rightly worded Android, for it's single purpose envision;

That's according to Apple anyway, that Android exists to surpass the iPhone. Either way, a range of services have now been created, to significantly benefit the user tend fold than before. When Apple were more lax with their Mobile Me segment, or iPhone feature base, they have now completely revamped this in time to offer online backup solutions through music, photos, documents completely seamlessly, at no added cost.

And then the feature intensified iPhone. From the iOS 3 to iOS 4. Small features, small upgrades. Now iOS 5 is large enough for publications to mention it could potentially put the hackers at risk. After all, the iPhone now offers integrated solutions like RIM with it's alternative messenger, wireless sync to PC free set up all from the company of one device.

iPhone paves the way for consumer technology in day to day activities, which means if you don't have one, buy one today.

FaceTime with TRA

Hi Mac users,


FaceTime. A popular protocol that is being established throughout Apple devices. Apple has a huge interest in FaceTime. This service blocked in the UAE has been left to:


1. Service providers.
2. Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
3. Apple.


In different regions, network executives amongst others have given responses to claim it's the regulatory authorities, Apple has taken down FaceTime information, there has been a carrier update..


However in the UAE it still remains blocked. So we contacted TRA extensively and we obtained a response for all of users for this fantastic service. This is the response we received:




   " Thank you for contacting the TRA


Services for Internet calls provided by third parties fall within the scope of VoIP Policy 2.0. As voice calls provided by Face Time are considered to be a Regulated Activity, such services have to be provided by a Licensee or by a third party in collaboration with a licensee. In case such services does not comply with the TRA Regulatory framework and the telecom law, the Licensees have the right to block such services as seen appropriate. For more information, kindly refer to the VoIP Policy ver.2.0 and Frequently Asked Questions which are available through the TRA website: www.tra.gov.ae. "






We then followed up, with two additional questions:




1. Reading up the information presented, it mentions a license needs to be present. Whereas i contacted Etisalat from a license perspective, they mentioned FaceTime is still blocked over 3G. Why is this?


2. Why does Skype, Google Voice and more work then over standard proxies?


3. Why is not banned in the GCC apart from UAE and Saudi Arabia?


TRA replied:





" Thank you for contacting the TRA. As mentioned in our reply, such services have to be provided by a Licensee or by a third party in collaboration with a licensee In case such services does not comply with the TRA Regulatory framework and the telecom law, the Licensees have the right to block such services as seen appropriate i.e. it is up to the licensee to determine which services to block. Moreover, the UAE Telecommunication Law and TRA regulations are applicable on UAE only and do not apply on other GCC countries. For more information, kindly refer to the VoIP Policy ver.2.0 and Frequently Asked Questions which are available through the TRA website: www.tra.gov.ae. "






We have sent a follow up response to align the fact that Saudi and the UAE is not working and FaceTime should work as:




A. It is blocked in Saudi and the UAE. Not just the UAE alone.


B. Skype is working.


You keep mentioning overall how the regulatory framework needs a license and it's blocked.


However you never mentioned why. Why is it blocked? FaceTime is a valid feature on the iPhone and i am making an official request
to have it unblocked by you. We are an Apple service in Dubai that our foundation directly helped to build Apple's success.
We are offering consumers great service like the Apple stores and more.. 


FaceTime is a product sold all over the world. Yet the UAE blocks it. There is no reason to. It is a feature that amasses with the product and assists
to sell it significantly.

If the above is the case then why doesn't the telecommunications provider unblock this feature.


Apple has huge brand presence now and the products that sell outweigh many other products. The one VOIP Service that should be working; is blocked.


1. Please unblock FaceTime from your regulations. It is not apparent from your end.


2. Please provide the contact number of the team responsible for FaceTime in Etisalat/ Du if they can unblock you can also from your end.

Apple store Dubai

do you wonder what an Apple store in Dubai, would possibly look like?

Majority of the people, that reside in Dubai, are expats. People from different nationalities and so forth.

Android and iPhone

Hello people,

as some of you may recollect we made a post on Apple and Google. Well today we are going to be talking about the state of the Android and iPhone..

Some great products these companies make, that even Steve Wozniak wants his old job back at Apple.. However he thinks he can make a valid contribution to the company now. He is probably right, as the Apple market now manages segmented business'

Take Google, they evidently have much attention being given to their Android services. Andy Rubin, mentioning recently how Honeycomb won't be completely closed, Android's philosophy has worked due to allowing developers to jump on board and write according to their wishes so simply. Even with the App store guidelines being more relaxed.. A recent review showcases how one user adores his iPhone but actually also likes an Android quite some much.

The fondness of the HTML5 products and rich experiences in these user friendly portable devices allows a greater competition between the two. Android now is taking the approach to have the market yield towards it's services; where the plato of products that Google offers becomes more prominent and solidified for someone to know what Android is. The alternative, as good as, if not better than, the iPhone.

However is it? iPhone makes more revenue than many phones, it literally downscaled the margin in an unheard of business acumen with Nokia that Nokia, decided to re strategize with.. Windows.

On that note, Gartner had to revise it's predictions as we know, to now say that Windows Mobiles will topple Apple eventually.

I wonder if they may have to revise again, probably so because Apple products are on the side, with Google share growing exponentially giving the diversification of the products.

There really is only room for two, a high margin product with a mass market product. RIM will have to make some seriously defining products to stand out from the crowd, unless another open source project comes along and defines a social networking platform like Facebook.

Something that captures the user's attention is what Apple is about, whereas Google is about offering the ' secondary option if Apple is not what you want '.

So what's it going to be? Motorla Zoom, or iPad?

Training CompuME

So we've been quite occupied training CompuMe. For those of you who do not know,

CompuMe operates a host of electronic services targeted to the Middle East. They have a store in MOE which is 10,000 sq.ft. It's worth checking out as the products are well displayed.

They have a small Apple section. And our job was to facilitate the staff at CompuMe, by elevating their stature in the retail presence.

We all know very well that the retail consumer section in Apple, even with the inclusion of Virgin or the newly appointed sections in Jumbo, are not working very well as staff cannot answer many questions, but also cannot comprehend ways to create new solutions or inform customers more about what the Mac is really about.

Hence we employed this philosophy with two methods of training, one general and the other more advanced onto CompuMe's staff.

The results have been beneficial to see so far. Although we are training the staff to ascertain customer needs more, focus on body language and sociology, our main component is the actual training itself to engage customer by providing more detailed and correct answers.

Most staff in most stores that sell Apple products cannot troubleshoot to save their jobs, but they can try.

We have officially changed the prospect of CompuMe. So far we've seen more thorough answers, more detailed outlook in providing customers the solutions they need. The idea was to help benefit CompuMe so in return they have repeat customers.

The Apple market here wishes to be changed; and this is exactly what we do..

End of application process for now

Hello Mac users,

we have decided to close our hiring recruitment scheme for now. In the scenery of things, to idealise and witness
a counterpart reseller is not what we do, which means we are not on a significant hiring spree.

We are a exclusive startup looking to maximise our opportunity with the right employee investment strategy.

IM communications

today's topic is about IM communications. So what is the best way to have a communication link for your Macintosh to your friends and others?

You probably use MSN, or even Meebo.

For multiple accounts, it's best to have Adium. Available at www.adium.im  Is a platform that allows
instant messaging in a friendly, yet aesthetically pleasing view.

You can capture your conversations, have Emoticons, including managing multiple accounts with ease.

Simply download, set up your accounts and your good to go.

Alternatively for this rapid keyboard users, people who send large files and really want to maximise the idea of IM communications, iChat is the way to go.

iChat is a tool that allows communication using AOL or Mobile Me. AOL you can sign up to, MobileMe is Apple's paid for service. You can find both of these on google with more information. MobileMe allows a trial for 30 days, then it expires and continues with your payment fee.

MobileMe comes with a host of benefits. However you can always sign up for a free trial.

iChat is a service that comes built in with every Mac. Consult Mac's choice of communication.

Mac support in Dubai

To Mac users in Dubai,

Recently we wrote an article about the support and service here. Today we wanted to add some more depth to engage the current scenario of what does exist, what doesn't, in Dubai for Apple products and it's service.

So as you all know, Apple is now largely dealt with by a host of resellers in Dubai. From the premium to non premium they manage, maintain and deliver the Apple product experience.

From what Consult Mac knows, there are many out there..

A potential buyer of a Mac can walk into Virgin, HMV, Jumbo electronics and think about purchasing the computer. So they approach, a sales staff and begin to ask questions.

One of two things tend to happen:

1. The sales staff  know which product is best for the consumer, they advise on the specific model as they know that model suits the candidate. Along with offering any other products or accessories. The sales staff has the company's image and brand ethos at bay.

2. The sales staff does not know which product is best, however in order to best advise, finds someone else who knows point 1, or decides to talk about certain information about Macs in ' general ' to eventually lead to an overall purchase.

By general acknowledgement: A potential buyer will always gear towards knowledge that surpasses' they're own. This creates the idea also of trust and recognition.

This is  are also in conjunction with if any technical questions were asked: customers are always looking for the ' easiest and simple solution ' with something they can manage. Technical solutions are derived upon expertise, with Mac it becomes specialist. Especially, in this region as the word Macintosh is not as common as PC.

The problem with the above ideology is: Consumers are looking for, the most ' ideal and practical solution ' .

Apple stores have the key term being used: ' to fit your needs '

Everything is about fitting, being comfortable. The decor, situational experience also in places like the above, are more for mass market based solutions: Music, DVD's and so forth..

That brings onto more specialist retailers such as iStyle or iSpot for my Qatar readers:

These stores are designed to fit the need of the Apple customers in Dubai. The front outlook
of the simple logo, along with an inviting idea, does bring in customers to the store.

They deliver some amazing products too. Apple consumers that walk in and want to buy a product,
are offered with purchase options and solutions. iSpot actually offers a good host of training, including after sales support.

The idea is, these services implement what Apple provides, in the retail stores. Apple services
are quite paramount in integrating an ' experience like no other ' - formed also
from the VP of retail having defined this outlook.

iStyle's service offers just like Jumbo, purchase solutions. You walk in to the store,
accessories on your right for example, nice little chairs on your left, you wish
for that to be complemented with ' after support '.

iStyle do not offer such direct support and maintenance, they rather give support by
mentioning third party services and locations. The brand itself provides recognition

So what are we looking for?

As some of you may know, we are looking to hire for our team. This does not mean conventionally we pay you the bog standard salary you sit in front of a computer and start tomorrow. We also don't advertise job roles on our website: As some of you have figured, you take what you know from the site and apply initiative. That's what we want. And we've received some major interest, thank you to all of you who have applied. We do take this in consideration, even if you have not been successful.

So what is the job role like? Something entirely different, ever changing, evolving and with much responsibility. We take the generic terms such as sales, technical and operation, put into the Consult Mac chamber, tailor it to our company with a high end altitude and feel that you've never quite come across.

Where is Apple and google really heading?

A brief note on the current stage of Apple and Google:

Some time ago,

Apple used to make Macintosh products, with a price tag, that was expensive. Google was non existent.
Today though, Apple is mainstream, as it was since 2003/4. Google was developing a platform, to recognise itself, to the audience: The world.

Since Google entered the search business, SEO infrastructure, Analytics, GoogleAds, all of these factors play a role in google's success. Apple on the other, focused more on software. A company at the intersection of liberal Arts and technology, amasses a concept that is only delivered by this mega brand.

This is because they provide software solutions, customised by an iconic shell of hardware. Instantly recognisable, then so is Google. Both companies today are unlike the other media platforms out there, that combine social media services together, or devices that record, take pictures, sound in smaller forms, Apple and Google are actually at the opposite ends of convergence.

Both companies clash in the mobile market, Android is gaining heavily, with advertisements today making more noise since the droid came out. Such as the tablet. Android's stability in the market is quite intriguing, at first it was a no growth prospect, but no due to the handful of mobile vendors out there, outpaces iPhone singularly now; this is in conjunction due to it's open policy of application creation.

 iPhone with it's reach to Verizon, should catch up on this particular vantage, however with the linear growth Apple is showing currently, both Google and Apple are for certain toppling the likes of Nokia, Blackberry recently for Apple, including the newly announced Microsoft operating system. In fact, Apple in it's next earnings call, could pass Microsoft's net profit.  Just not operating margins as Apple makes low margin hardware Microsoft makes high margin based software.

iAd, Admob from Google, Google is clearly more defined in the advertising space, more idealistic to say that Google has a focal viewpoint on search and advertising that knows, how to reach to it's audience. Apple seem pretty eager in this field, however with it's growth not as recognised so much as google.

Will Apple enter the search business? The point is, both of these companies Google and Apple are not in any where near convergence, more parallel solutions that now and then meet at a point, with one company having gaining on the other in a product category.

As people say, it's now down to the TV market. GoogleTV anyone?  Or i ask again, what if Apple entered the search business?
